I am an elementary education major with endorsements in mathematics, language arts, science, and social science at Illinois State University. In the spring of 2013, I completed six observation hours at Metcalf Laboratory School and three observation hours at University High School. I observed a variety of classrooms to learn about the physical, social, and cognitive development of children. I learned how these different types of development interact to impact a child’s life drastically. I also observed five community-based hours around the town of Normal to report on the literacy practice that I observed. These clinical hours helped me to learn about the social interactions between adults and children and how a child’s literacy is a form of personal identity. Similarly, I have done two clinical hours of mathematical tutoring at Prairieland Elementary. These clinical hours were extremely beneficial to see how children learn mathematics. With the hopes of becoming a math teacher with the math endorsement that I am working towards, the mathematic clinical hours have helped me gain insight and experience on how to effectively communicate mathematics to young children. I also worked for the past two years at a summer camp in which I was the head camp counselor. I formulated lesson plans for each day of the week for three months. For each lesson, I planned a gymnasium game, an art craft, and an outside activity. Similarly, I balanced fun games with journaling time and reading time. I established and scheduled set times a week for the children to comfortably read and relax by expressing their emotions about previous activities and upcoming events in their designated journal, which they were allowed to decorate and personalize. I also referred to the children and incorporated the activities that they expressed interest in into the lesson plans. I adjusted the daily activities in cooperation with parents’ schedules, weather forecasts, and children’s special needs. The children and I worked together to obtain a maximum learning environment while also having an enjoyable summer. Similarly, I have a very specific teaching philosophy. I believe that each child is a unique creature who needs a secure, comfortable, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my goal as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, encourages risk-taking, and invites a sharing of creative ideas. There are three elements that I believe are essential to establish this type of desired environment. The first is the teacher acting as a guide to learning by scaffolding questions to peak the interests of the students. The second is creating an organized, structured schedule that the children will accommodate to. The third is promoting respect for all things and all people by teaching diversity and self-actualization.
